Developing countries are subject to extreme and unpredictable climate changes.

Their impacts impede development and point to the need to improve understanding of climate risks and to anticipate them in relation to sustainable development priorities.

Climate change will likely affect their ability to reach poverty reduction and sustainable development strategies.

Projections of climate change point to increases in climate risks as a result of mid-continent drying, increased frequency and severity of some climate extremes, greater variability in Asian summer monsoon precipitation, and changes in El Niño - Southern Oscillation patterns (ENSO).

Climate change is expected to deepen poverty, as well as affect livelihoods, assets, infrastructure, environmental resources and economic growth.

The ACCCA project will enable and support effective adaptation decisions related to the United Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and other Multi-lateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) while also promoting attainment of the MDGs.

The objectives of this initiative are to:

  • Increase the resilience and well-being of groups in developing countries of Africa that are particularly vulnerable to climate change and other environmental stresses;
  • Integrate climate change adaptation strategies into development planning and poverty reduction policies; and
  • Enhance the participation of all actors in civil society, including disadvantaged groups that are particularly vulnerable, in forming policies related to development, the implementation of MEAs, and poverty reduction.
